Coffee at home
I love espresso, whether it's a flat white, an americano, or an iced espresso. One a day from a café adds up. Run the cost over a year and a good home espresso machine and grinder are easy to justify.
My setup has served me daily for about 14 years, often with a few extra drinks on weekends, without a single issue.
The setup
- Gaggia ClassicThe espresso machine.
- Rancilio steam wandA commercial wand swapped in for the stock one. It takes a little practice, but it makes much more predictable microfoam and a smoother froth.
- Baratza VirtuosoThe grinder.
- AccessoriesA Motta tamper and a Toroid frothing pitcher.
- Bonavita gooseneck kettleFor extra hot water, and great for pour‑over too.
How I use it
An americano in the morning. A latte after supper, which is also a friend favourite.
The verdict
Depending on the beans, it's at least as good as most coffee shops, and often better.
